Tailwind - Cooling Helmet for Outdoor Workers

Safety Innovation for Climate Resilience

This design takes a more holistic approach to work or safety. The aim of this helmet is not only to protect the worker's head from blunt force, but also to ensure sufficient cooling and protect from heatstroke. A wide front intake maximizes air capture while providing shade, reducing heat buildup. To optimize circulation, the design incorporates a vortex passage utilizing cylindrical columns to generate airflow vortices, thereby enhancing heat dissipation and sweat evaporation. Additionally, the Bernoulli-inspired narrowing tail generates a pressure difference, accelerating airflow and expelling warm air for a continuous cooling effect.

JURY STATEMENT

Given the warming climate and extreme conditions affecting construction workers, this design takes a more holistic approach to safety. The research for this project drew on both structural structural and aerodynamic principles, ensuring the helmet wearer’s safety and comfort in harsh environments.

WINNER STATEMENT

We are genuinely grateful that our approach—focusing on structural solutions that blend form and function—has been recognized with an iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD. This prize reminds us that there is still much to learn, and it encourages our team to continue addressing problems at their roots with humility and care.
