"New immigrants" are people from abroad who have married Taiwanese nationals and settled in Taiwan. In order to be able to communicate with family and to educate the children, speaking Chinese becomes a most important task. The Taiwanese phonetic spelling system is just as important as English letters and Chinese pronunciation consists of Mandarin phonetic symbols, the basis of learning Chinese. To make learning easier for new immigrants, “Tasty Mandarin Phonetic Symbols” uses Taiwanese everyday snacks. Each snack represents a phonetic symbol to make learning easier and more memorable through association with everyday food.
