The Coordinates in The Forest
Residential Architecture
Koji Sakurai
This project is a renovation of a 50-year-old wooden house in a forest. This renovation aims to preserve owner’s memories while creating a place where nostalgia and future activities coexist. The 50-year-old wooden post-and-beam framework is interpreted as a tree of the same age, forming a “coordinate system of trees.” The past activities are already marked into the land, like “functions” plotted upon this coordinate system. To blend future activities within these coordinates as new functions, concrete forms have been placed alongside the preserved structure, allowing fresh experiences to unfold on the same stage.
