The Modular Unit

Housing project for refugees

This project focuses on providing safe housing for one of the groups most vulnerable to infection with Covid-19 – refugees. At the same time, it sets out to tackle the long-standing problem of urban blight, as a previously functioning city or district collapses into decrepitude. The Modular Unit project seeks a symbiotic solution to both problems by repopulating areas that have functioning infrastructure but a dwindling population. The flexible modular design of the project considers the varying needs of different-sized families.

JURY STATEMENT

This modular housing solution aims to provide shelter for refugees, both to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to help regenerate urban districts. It’s a design that seeks to heal the problems of yesterday, mitigate the pandemic today, and sow seeds for healthy the urban communities of tomorrow.

WINNER STATEMENT

I felt immense joy and validation upon hearing that I was selected for this award and I immediately shared the news with my mother, who has always been my biggest supporter. I am grateful to my faculty and mentors at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology for expanding my horizons and always pushing me to do my best.
