The Schistoscope

Medical device

The Schistoscope is a 3D-printed, smartphone-based diagnostic device for point-of-care detection of schistosomiasis in remote areas where the disease is endemic. Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease with a high rate of morbidity and mortality in African countries. The Schistoscope automatizes diagnostics, with an algorithm detecting the level of infection. Its usage is simplified to increase access and accuracy, enabling more affordable and accessible diagnosis. The overall design focus of the Schistoscope is to improve health and well-being.

JURY STATEMENT

From the point of view of availability and functionality, this solution is tailored to local needs. A great aspect of this design is that the designers have already created a working prototype.

WINNER STATEMENT

We are honored to see the Schistoscope selected as one of the winners of the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD. Especially in current circumstances, a focus on access to a medical product seems timely and necessary. With its low-cost and smart user-centered design the Schistoscope specifically focuses on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring good health and wellbeing.
