The Value of Ferns

Paper currency design

Shu-Te University

Taiwan is home to over 600 species of indigenous fern, thus earning it its title ‘The Kingdom of Ferns”. The Value of Ferns series features ten of Taiwan’s extremely rare ferns, based on research conducted on these ferns and the dangers they face. In consideration of the fern's value to Taiwan's social ecology, this design was commissioned for banknotes. It is hoped that through the widespread circulation of these banknotes, awareness will increase of the need to protect rare ferns.

iF Gold Statement

A very well-crafted idea brought to life in a compelling way through different touch points. Protecting an endangered species is mostly a question of money, and promoting the value of endangered ferns on banknotes is a great idea. Inspired by 19th century botanical engravings and classical patterns, the result embodies the main message while preserving Taiwanese aesthetics.
