Wooden Environmental Education Center

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION

This is an environmental education facility situated in its field: the rare natural environment focused on the satoyama remaining on the site. Since the forest on the premises has been thinned to improve its environment, we designed a large wooden space with an attractive structural framework using "thin and short" byproduct wood pieces. A reciprocal structure made of small pieces available from logs, instead of laminated lumber sourced from a far production site, created a space wrapped in distinctive thin short wood pieces, blending in with its surroundings, to make use of the architectural space itself for environmental education.

iF Gold Statement

This is a building that practices what it preaches, from the poetry of the filigree roof to the overall form and structure determined by the kind of timber that can be sustainably harvested from the surrounding forest. It serves as a model for how best to utilize timber harvested through forest thinning.
