Trail
Firefighting device
Trail is a device that improves communication between firefighters and fire department officers. It does this by boosting the signal of their 1-watt radios and improving the firefighters’ environmental understanding by recording zonal temperatures around Trail devices dropped throughout the building. This data is used to determine if temperatures are unsafe and to advise officers whether firefighters should evacuate the building. Firefighters can also use the strobe lighting from the Trail devices to navigate a path from device to device in zero visibility.
Trail is a simple yet brilliant idea. It improves communication within the fire department team and can help save lives. The design is very clean and the usability self-explanatory. It is conceivable that this system can be adapted to other situations such as earthquakes and mining emergencies.
WINNER STATEMENTI am so honored to receive an iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD and to receive recognition for all of the hard work I have put into creating Trail over the past year. I would like to give special thanks to the Irish Fire and Rescue services for the time and knowledge they gave throughout Trails’ development and to my lecturers at TU Dublin for their help and guidance over the past year.
