Wood, metal, and plastic, or is paper enough for us?
Furniture made of vulcanized fiber
Do we still need wood, metal, and plastic, or is paper sufficient? "Form Follows Function" – this was the guiding principle of my thesis. The series of objects, consisting of a shelf, a bench, and a lamp, is made from vulcanized fiber. Vulcanized fiber is considered the oldest truly sustainable plastic in the world, as it is made entirely from cotton cellulose, also known as paper. The material thickness of the objects ranges between 3.2 and 4 mm. 4 mm vulcanized fiber weighs 1.26 kg/m2. In comparison, 4 mm birch veneer weighs 2.72 kg/m2.
Vulcanized fiber is an outstanding material for furniture. It’s strong, lightweight, moldable, durable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable. A perfect blend of innovation and environmental responsibility. Truly a smart choice!
WINNER STATEMENTHonored to receive the iF Design Student Award for my furniture series Vinet. With the question “Wood, metal, and plastic, or is paper enough for us?”, I hope to inspire fresh thinking. As a designer, I see it as my responsibility to challenge norms and advocate for a more sustainable future.
