iF is official partner of the WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL VALENCIA 2022
See you there at the awards ceremony of the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD on 16 June 2022!
This year the heart of design beats in Valencia (Spain) - the World Design Capital 2022!
As an official partner, iF Design aims to spread the Spanish design power and creativity all over the world. Joint activities are already in concrete planning:
On 16 June 2022, iF will honor the next generation of designers in the World Design Capital! The winners of this year's student competition, the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD, will be invited to Valencia and will be celebrated there.
iF: What is the idea behind Experience Valencia 22?
WSA: After not being able to attend face-to-face events for two years, I believed that the best way to get us all together again had to be with a more festive and fun atmosphere. And also the objective has been to bring great professionals from different disciplines to be able to have a broader vision of what is currently being done.
iF: Is there a central topic for these EXPERIENCE days? And what formats can visitors expect?
WSA: I did not want there to be a theme on which to develop the contents because I thought that during the two days that the conferences last, it is better that there be a variety of subjects and that in this way the experience can be more complete. That is why we will have workshops, conferences and even interviews in podcast format that will be recorded during the festival.
iF: Who is this event for? Who should definitely attend?
WSA: The event is designed for both students and professionals. Both will find content important enough not to miss the event. And in general, anyone who is interested in knowing how design is a practice that is increasingly in demand. I'm sure everyone will enjoy it!
Wences Sanz Alonso
He is a professor in Design at IE University and has worked in leading advertising and design companies for more than 20 years. As one of the founders of Domestika, the most important Spanish-speaking design community in Spain and Latam, he plays a crucial role in the Spanish design scene.
Wences is also the founder and former director of the renowned MadinSpain. Apart from this massive event, he created smaller ones, called Domestika Meetings, which were held throughout Spain and brought together great professionals in a more informal way. Currently, he organizes other monthly events in various Spanish cities called Play Restart.
Graduated in Advertising and Public Relations, he has also worked in the field of education as Director of the Digital Graphic Design Program of the Miami Ad School of Madrid, and as Director of the Art and Design Area of the European University of Madrid. Additionally, Wences was and is part of various renowned award jurys.
iF: How does the Experience Valencia 22 stand out from other design events?
WSA: The first thing is that it is part of the contents of an event as important as the World Design Capital. I think that Valencia has long deserved to host this type of event. The city, its gastronomy, its culture... all of this together makes visiting Valencia in June a very interesting experience.
iF: Which highlights are waiting for the guests? What is your personal highlight?
WSA: I think there will be great moments during the festival. In my experience organizing design events, I try to go with a clear head to surprise myself once I'm there. You have to look at those designers that you may not know so well because perhaps from then on they are a reference. This is the good thing about this type of event, where you can enjoy the experience of proven designers together with young professionals who are already making a name for themselves.
iF: What do you wish for after the whole event?
WSA: That the Monday after the event, when you are back at home and go back to work, you have much more desire to enjoy your work and that the festival has served to fill you with energy. And being able to see many professional colleagues again in person that you have not been able to see in recent years. I am a firm believer in face-to-face events in order to grow as a designer.
The project World Capital Valencia 2022 is run by a team that dreams with the chance of Valencia becoming a world leader
(from left to right): María Lapiedra, Silvia Flórez, Amparo Balbastre, Xavi Calvo, Miguel Arraiz, Alicia Matallín, Víctor Aguado, Corinna Heilmann.
The title ‘World Design Capital’ is given every two years by the WORLD DESIGN ORGANIZATION (WDO) in Montreal (Canada) to cities that use design to improve economic, social and cultural life.
Valencia is the third largest city in Spain and is located on the Mediterranean coast. In the Valencia region, which includes the provinces of Castellon, Valencia and Alicante (from north to south), one finds a tremendous amount of creativity, design talent, innovation and good design. The election of the World Design Capital 2022 is a fantastic opportunity to show how the design industry in the region of Valencia enriches both Spain and the rest of the world. Jimmy D'Heer from our iF Design Office in Spain also understands the great potential that lies in this collaboration: "We at iF Design will support the WDC 2022 team in promoting Valencian and Spanish design on an international level by providing a window of information and communication to a very broad international community."
The iF team is very much looking forward to working with the WDC Valencia team – to sharing, inspiring and of course networking!
See you in Valencia!
