Most preschool children are unable to coordinate their breathing while using their inhaler. A spacer is used in other to distribute the medication evenly. The spacer is often unmanageable for children because of its size and that it needs to be attached to the inhaler. By adding extra space inside the actual inhaler, large non-respirable particles in the MDI aerosol mist can now deposit on the walls. This leaves only the smaller airborne respirable particles for inhalation. The child does not need to apply any special inhalation technique – just ordinary breathing and there is no need for a separate part to be carried around.
