Bamboo Language
Concept of Growing Fun
Longquan, a municipality in China's Zhejiang Province, is famous for its lingzhi mushrooms, a medicinal fungus that is highly prized in Chinese Traditional Medicine. Typically, the fungus is cultivated on decaying wood chips, but this has taken its toll on Longquan’s forests, which still cover 84 percent of the area. This cultivation concept replaces wood with waste bamboo which would otherwise be discarded, thereby achieving a double environmental benefit – conservation and waste recycling.
Replacing wood with bamboo waste for mushroom cultivation is a practical application of the design philosophy of sustainability.
WINNER STATEMENTI am honored to receive this award, and I hope that my design can provide inspiration for the fungus farming industry, reduce the need for trees in this economy, and protect forest resources.
