The new interpretation of the six categories of Chinese characters. As Chinese, we attempted to analyze the differences between Chinese and western characters. The main differences lie in form, sound, and meaning. Major western words are composed of the phonetic systems for words; a letter itself is meaningless, only when letters are put together will they generate meanings. According to Xu Shen’s book “The Origin of Chinese Characters”, there are six categories: pictograms, ideograms, ideogrammic compounds, phono-semantic compounds, transformed cognates and rebus.
