Annual Report

16 years of destruction.16 years of reconstruction. Solidere’s Annual Report 2010 occasions a moment of reflection. In its dedication to the lens of a single photographer, City in Layers narrates the history of the Beirut city center through Basilico’s 1991-2011 images, labeled by archive numbers and punctuated by inserts. White terrains echo his introspection, contemplating stillness while capturing urban transformation. Translucent paper overlays text and image. Tissue-wrapped cotton cover suggests layers of city fabric. The report explores a new approach to documenting Solidere’s work in Beirut, a place where history, present and future evolve in unexpected ways.

iF Gold Statement

A company tasked with rebuilding the Beirut city centre – which takes ownership of the metaphor of a city’s various layers in its annual report by reflecting construction materials and with a special layout: different types of paper, varying, aesthetically calm typography, emotional photography … the reader is made to understand in a quiet, comprehensible form what Solidere is doing in a city which remains destroyed to a greater extent than it has been rebuilt. A very touching, highly intensive iF gold award winner.
