IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server DS8000

Electronic-data storage device

IBM Design Consulting Services

The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server DS8000 is an enterprise-class data storage system and the latest in disc storage technology. At 1857 mm h x 1182 mm d x 845 mm w, about 80% the volume of the replaced model, it doubles the data storage capacity. Power demands presented thermal and acoustic-energy challenges to the industrial designer and engineers. Overlapping the vertical elements defeated line-of-sight, high-frequency acoustic energy while maximizing the air intake area for cooling. Serviceability, a major feature in this version, also required special attention. The front cover has the first step: an indicator light, in the light-path diagnostics system, enabling service technicians and/or customers to follow a path to the component that needs to be replaced. Service time is reduced and customer convenience increased.
