Sea Gypsies

Sea Habitat focuses on developing a new residential form for living on the water (swimming settlement on the sea), taking into account the financial possibilities of the Thai population. We had several basic criteria for our project: water swell, occurrence of natural materials, financial possibilities of the Thai population, easy feasibility and the support of traditional Thai construction methods. The basic floor plan reflects an open concept with many open or half-open areas. The concept was developed for an ethnic group like the sea gypsies in Thailand, who want to have a lasting place to live on the open sea (Andaman Sea).

JURY STATEMENT

"Architecture nowadays tends towards using standard solutions - regardless of culture, location and climate. This concept shows just the opposite: natural materials are used for construction in a traditional way, taking the location into consideration. Here the focus is on suitable building: using a little material and energy as possible. sea habitat stands symbolically for the way in which we have to rethink things with respect to architecture and construction."

WINNER STATEMENT

What a wonderful surprise! We have always dreamed of such an outcome. It's an indescribable feeling.
