GUARO FARMS designs, builds and manages micro-factories in 20-foot shipping containers that process spices and herbs into essential oils at the farm gate. The factories are strategically distributed within walking distance of groups of 500 farmers, reducing post-harvest losses, ensuring product quality, and empowering women who cultivate spices in Ethiopia. Essential oil production with a high mass-to-yield ratio needs large plant inputs to produce small quantities of oil. Aggregation of produce is necessary for the viable production of essential oils and processing is best done close to cultivation to minimize oil losses.
To minimize post harvest losses, a mobile mini laboratory transforms herbs into fragrant oils. The result is a compact, high-quality product that can be marketed directly to end customers. Smart, sensual, scaleable.
WINNER STATEMENTWinning the iF Social Impact Prize is an honor for Guaro Farms. It validates our efforts to reward smallholder farmers for practicing regenerative agriculture in Ethiopia.
