Smart Living: This furniture adapts to your daily needs
With the upcoming Habitat in Valencia, we take a closer look at furniture – specifically, smart furniture. This includes benches that convert into recliners at the touch of a button, lights that mimic daylight and air purifiers that do more than just filter the air. Multifunctionality at its best!
Benches that convert into loungers at the touch of a button, lights that follow the daylight, and air purifiers that can do more than just filter: technology is not only making our homes more comfortable, but also increasingly smarter. Smart functions increase comfort, adapt flexibly to individual needs, and thus redesign our everyday lives. The fact that this topic is more relevant than ever is demonstrated by both the upcoming Habitat in Valencia (29 September – 2 October) with more than 50.000 visitors every year one of the biggest international fairs for interior and furniture, and some of past and this year's winning projects of the iF DESIGN AWARD.
These examples clearly demonstrate that furniture, lighting and appliances with integrated technology are becoming more functional and opening up new possibilities in terms of health, well-being and flexibility within the home.
One example of this multifunctionality is the electric sofa bench 'BARS' from Dream Inc. With just a few clicks, it can be transformed from a classic bench into a chaise longue or an ergonomic armchair, making it ideal for use as both a home office and a retreat. The “relax mode”, based on scientific findings on body-neutral posture, provides targeted relief for the body. Smart furniture like this not only responds to, but also actively shapes, changing living habits.
The “AeroFurniture Air Purifier” hybrid from LG, winner of an iF DESIGN AWARD 2025, is a tabletop air purifier that provides clean air and music at the same time. It is packed with convenient functions, such as clean air with reliable performance, with high-quality sound, wireless charging, mood light, and low noise.
One example from the lighting industry is the 'Low Level Lighting Table Lamp' from Foshan Electrical and Lighting. This table lamp uses innovative multi-reflection technology to produce uniform illumination and a soft, glare-free light. The light intensity and colour temperature can be adjusted individually for concentrated work and relaxed reading.
The award-winning designs demonstrate the potential of combining design and technology: intelligent furniture, lighting and appliances increase living comfort and set new standards for inclusion, efficiency and individualization. Intelligent design therefore defines not only how we live, but also how we want to live.
